Facing the Facts About Arkansas EducationIn the belief that Arkansas cannot make major advances in education until our current status is understood, the Arkansas Business & Education Alliance (ABEA) and UALR have published Facing the Facts About Arkansas Education. The report does not have all the answers or a complete solution for better education. It does not provide a roadmap or simple instructions. Facing the Facts does paint a picture of education in Arkansas and then asks the reader to decide how important education is to the future of the state and our children. From both an economic and cultural perspective, how valuable is first rate education? Facing the Facts reports that Arkansas consistently ranks near the bottom among the fifty states in educational attainment and achievement. Our financing of public schools is among the least adequate. By most recognized measures, our children are not getting the quality of education they would find in almost any other state. The best possible education in Arkansas would provide our children with the same skills we are asking the reader to apply in studying this report. The best possible education would convey knowledge, learning skills, and the ability to intelligently process information. Our democracy, culture, and economy increasingly require education at this level. Excellent education prepares us to respond to complex situations, to employ good judgment, and to make decisions.
